Class Info and Syllabus

Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to Room 106. My name Is Cindy Martin and I am teaching the 7th and 8th graders this year. This is my second year teaching your children and I am so excited to have them back. My philosophy of teaching is to meet the needs of each individual child by teaching to their own learning style! Our Parapro Alicia Grimaldo also works with your children. She is detrimental to the running of the classroom. Each period is different. Sometimes we will teach the class as a whole, while other times Mrs. G and I will break the class up into groups to better serve the students needs.

Curriculum areas we are focusing on this year include Math, English,  Social  Skills, Life Skills and, as always, a mix of Art, Science and Social Studies.

Students were asked to bring the following supplies to school with them on August 4th…

  1. a binder with tabs
  2. paper
  3. pencils

Although it is not required, boxes of Kleenex are always appreciated.

My homework policy this year is a little different. Students will have homework Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. No homework on Monday or Friday. Some of the homework will be review of basic skills, but other assignments will require parent participation in order for your child to earn a grade. These assignments will be Life/Social Skills based.

My grading policy is as follows. Students will receive points for all assignments. Homework will be worth 5 points. Quizzes and tests are 10 points and big projects can range from 15-20 points. If a student doesn’t do an assignment, he or she will receive a zero. Homework assignments can be turned in one day late for half credit.

Some classroom rules and procedures are…

  1. Walk into classroom
  2. Place backpacks under shelf by bathroom
  3. Get agenda and write homework in it
  4. Be in your assigned seat when bell rings
  5. Have proper heading on paper
  6. Turn homework into turn in basket
  7. Do bellwork
  8. Wait for teacher to dismiss you into groups
  9. Raise your hand to ask or answer a question.
  10. Transition time is when you should go to the bathroom and get water. Unless it is an EMERGENCY!!!!
  11. If you need water or a bathroom break raise your hand and ask, don’t just get up.

This year, because of 9th Grade Academy, students have the opportunity to attend football games. However, there are other events like school dances and band concerts that students can go to. Please try to come to at least one event and show your school pride. I know that I am going to.

If you have any questions or concerns or if you would like to schedule a conference do not hesitate to contact me. I have an open door policy and parents are always welcome to come in anytime.
