J.O. Combs Middle School Guidance Program focuses on the rapidly changing needs of young adolescents. It is especially sensitive to the struggles of middle school students in identifying and balancing the demands of academic, career, and social competencies. Counselors work with the students and parents on educational and career development as students transition to high school.
Guidance Curriculum
Purpose: awareness, skill development and application in the following areas:
- Learning to Live; personal/social development
- Learning to Learn; academic development
Areas of development: personal-social, educational, and career
- Individual counseling
- Individual Graduation Plans (8th Grade)
- Consultation with parents and teachers
- Student schedule consultations
Responsive Services
Purpose: prevention and intervention
- Address immediate concerns of students, parents and teachers
- Personal counseling; crisis counseling
- Consultations; agency referrals
- Areas addressed: academic concerns, school-related concerns (conduct, tardiness, absences and dropout prevention).
- Relationship concerns, abuse, grief/loss death, substance abuse, anger management,conflict resolution,family issues/concerns and coping with stress.
System Support
Purpose: program delivery and support
- Guidance program development
- Counselor’s professional development
- Parent education
- Teacher/administrator/professional consultation
- Student Intervention Team, Individual Education Plan, and 504 Plan consultation
- Public relations.
